Social Work
An Overview of Queen’s Social Work Department

Specialty Service Areas
Specialty teams are available to provide services to patients and their families within certain areas. These specialty teams are:

  • Critical Care/Ortho/Neuro
  • Oncology/Med-Surg
  • In-patient Psychiatric Services
  • Emergency Department Services

All staff social workers are Master's prepared, and licensed to practice in the state of Hawai’i. There are five Bachelor level Social Work Associates who provide community discharge planning and placement services. All staff members work together to facilitate appropriate treatment intervention during the patient and family's hospitalization.

Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment and Therapy of Patient and Family Psychological Needs
Services are provided to help patients and families identify the psychological issues related to hospitalization and discharge, and facilitate coping and adjustment issues. Social workers provide brief therapy for newly diagnosed patients and families, crisis intervention, counseling for Acute Stress Reaction, substance abuse counseling, and chronic illness counseling.

The Social Work staff works with the patient/family and health care team to coordinate and facilitate treatment throughout the hospital stay and discharge to the community.

Discharge Planning Coordination and Community Resource Linkage
Coordination of discharge planning for patients and families is provided. Social workers will assist you with the necessary planning for Nursing Home or Care Home placement, transfer to other facilities, outpatient home care linkage, community resource linkage, and outpatient follow-up referrals. Every effort will be made to procure placement, if necessary. Once a patient's level of care has been lowered to less than acute, the patient will be discharged within three days of the notification. If there is no available placement alternative, the patient will be discharged home. This is necessary to preserve the acute care services for patients needing them.

MSW Graduate Practicum Training Program
The department provides training and supervision for the University of Hawai’i School of Social Work Master's in Social Work Program. Second year practicum students are offered twenty four hours a week of training and supervision under the direction of social work practicum instructor, and remain on campus for one year.

University students apply to the department each spring. Following interviews with student instructors and coordination with the university, an average of ten students are matched with their preference and available instructors.
