Respiratory Therapy
From Research to Practice—Journal Club

Respiratory Care Services at The Queen's Medical Center strives to implement research based practice changes. One necessary component is well done applicable research. Research need not be duplicated but updated to improve Queen’s clinical practice. To meet this goal, RCPs need to continually update themselves with the massive amounts of current literature available.

An easy way to meet this goal is to implement a Journal Club. The club provides an opportunity for RCPs to meet up with physicians and other members of the health care team to discuss new ideas that will make a positive impact to patient care. Several new ideas to practice changes have been made to date which includes, ventilator circuit changes, elimination of routine use of humidifiers, high dose albuterol for treatment of hyperkalemia, and implementation of PEP and Flutter Valve into the Patient Driven Protocols delivery model. Queen’s most recent Journal Club discussion looked at the role of the RCP as case managers.

Other benefits of the "From Research to Practice" Journal Club are:

  • Nurturing and innovation
  • Enhancement of public speaking and group process facilitation skills
  • Keeping abreast of current material
  • Exposure to participative decision making
  • Increased socialization and enhanced personal relationships among colleagues

The Journal Club meets once a month at 11:30am. Articles are chosen and distributed one month in advance and made accessible to all therapists. Lunch, usually pizza is served, and is well appreciated by all who attend.
