Respiratory Therapy
The History of Respiratory Therapy at Queen’s

July 1, 1969, a new operating department by the name of Inhalation Therapy Department was officially established within the Queen's Hospital. The department was staffed with a chief therapist, an instructor, a secretary and thirteen full-time technicians. Service and coverage in the medical center started out in phases and began as partial eight hour coverage, and then increased to 24 hours coverage seven days a week. Services provided at the time included: continuous mechanical ventilator care, nebulizer therapies, blood gas analysis, code 500s, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary lung function tests.

In December, 1969, Philip Foti, MD accepted the position of Director of Professional Services - Inhalation Therapy and Pulmonary Laboratory. In January 1970, an Inhalation Therapy Advisory Committee was formed to establish clinical procedures guidelines, equipment training programs, and act as a liaison between the Inhalation Therapy Department and Cardiovascular Pulmonary Service.

The 1970s saw the growth of Inhalation Therapy, not only in the medical center but throughout the Nation. With the changes and advancements in the profession, the department's name was subsequently changed to the Respiratory Care Services Department. The department established new guidelines on patient care, recruited registered therapists, acquired new state-of-the-art equipment, and worked very closely with physicians and house staff to provide comprehensive quality patient care.

Today, the department provides a full range of services from critical/trauma care to diagnostic tests like pulmonary lung function tests and metabolic monitoring. A recent advancement in the department includes the implementation of Patient Driven Protocols which are respiratory plans of care that promote high quality, state-of-the-art, and cost efficient therapy. The department continues to assist with patient discharges and provides pulmonary rehabilitation education programs to promote wellness.
