Respiratory Therapy
Patient Driven Protocols

Protocols provide a Respiratory Plan of Care that promotes appropriate ordering of respiratory therapy based on clearly defined therapeutic indications and measurable outcomes.

Queen’s Protocol Project began in February of 1996, and was successfully piloted on one unit with a core group of "Protocol" Respiratory Care Practitioners. Oxygen, Lung Inflation, Bronchodilator and Secretion Management Therapy are offered through the Protocol Project.

Patient Driven Protocols provide a valuable model intended to:

  1. Optimize the quality of patient care provided by the Respiratory Care Practitioner and health care team.
  2. Facilitate and encourage communication and collaboration between disciplines and physicians.
  3. Expedite care delivery to all patients within the Protocol model.
  4. Better identify and address respiratory home care and educational needs.
  5. Increase consistency in the care delivered.
  6. Adapt to Care Map and Disease Management Initiatives.

As members of the patient care team, everyone can benefit from Patient Driven Protocols, but most importantly, the Respiratory Care patients.
