The Queen’s Medical Center was one of the first facilities in the United States to establish a Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), sometimes called a Neuroscience ICU or Neuro ICU, as a part of its commitment to bring innovative expertise, the best treatment and the latest technologies to the Islands
As Hawaii’s only Neuroscience ICU, our specially-trained team of doctors; nurse practitioners; nurses; pharmacists; dieticians; and respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapists, takes care of patients who are critically ill with neurological conditions such as:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Severe seizures
- Spinal cord injury
- Severe weakness from muscle or nerve disorders
- Recent brain surgery
It is both nationally and internationally recognized that patients with neurological injury who receive care in an NSICU have a better chance for survival and are more likely to return to a good quality of life.
