Radiation Oncology


Radiation Oncology at Queen’s offers the most comprehensive range of radiotherapy services in the State of Hawai’i. The program has been accredited by the American College of Radiology since 1994.

The broad expertise of the radiation oncology team is reflected by the diverse disciplines of the team members:

  • 6 physicians, all board-certified radiation oncologists
  • 5 registered nurses
  • 3 medical physicists
  • 4 medical dosimetrists
  • 13 radiation therapists
  • 2 medical physics technicians
  • 7 administrative personnel (including patient services representatives, medical transcribers, secretary, manager)

The department offers an extensive range of advanced-technology approaches to ensure unsurpassed clinical care. Hardware and software supporting the clinical program include:

  • 3 linear accelerators (two dual energy, and all with both photon and
  • electron radiation), including a new Varian 21EX.
  • Electronic Portal Imaging: Siemens Beam View
  • Computed Tomography Simulator: Picker AcQsim
  • Network Management System (electronic record & verify system):
  • IMPAC ACCESS
  • High Dose Rate Remote Afterloader: Nucletron Microselectron
  • 4 Sophisticated Treatment Planning Systems: ADAC Pinnacle for
  • teletherapy, Nucletron Plato for Brachytherapy, Radionics XKnife for
  • SRS/SRT, Varian Variseed for prostate seed implants
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery Hardware: Radionics XKnife

Innovative treatment programs initiated at Queen’s over the past several years, include stereotactic radiosurgery (aka XKnife) and radioactive seed prostate implants. The department currently offers every clinicallyestablished radiotherapy modality in common usage in the U.S.

In 2000, the department provided care to 1,457 new patients. This resulted in the delivery of 36,155 total procedures. Of these 35,000 were external beam radiation treatments and 502 were brachytherapy procedures. The department also serves as the primary provider of pediatric radiation therapy in Hawai’i.

Hours of operations are from 6:30am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday. Radiation therapists are on-call until midnight every day of the year to accommodate urgent/emergent care. Further details are available by calling 808.547.4771.
