Qualifications of Registered Dietitians

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the RD credential:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree from a US accredited university or college with specialized coursework approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the largest organization of nutrition professionals
  • Have completed an ADA-accredited practice program at a health care facility
  • Have passed a national certifying examination
  • Complete continuing professional education requirements to maintain registration

Queens' Registered Dietitians hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice. One of these areas is nutrition support. Certified Nutrition Support Dietitians work to provide adequate nutritional intake to people who cannot eat a normal diet, for example, patients in critical care who require intravenous feeding.

Several of Queens' Registered Dietitians also hold specializations as Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE's). CDE's are licensed or certified health professionals such as RDs, nurses or physicians who have had a minimum of 2 years and 1000 hours of diabetes patient education, work in a primary role as a diabetes educator and have passed the national certifying exam. Maintenance of the CDE credential requires passing the exam again every 5 years.
