Preparing for Your Surgery?

Header-Services

This guide has been developed to explain how to prepare for your upcoming surgical procedure at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Before Surgery

  • Take medications per your doctor's instructions. Some medicines may need to be stopped before surgery.
  • Discontinue smoking and the use of herbal supplements, vitamins or street drugs.
  • Contact your surgeon if there is a change in your health or you develop a cold.
  • Coordinate to have a responsible person accompany you home after surgery.

Night Before Surgery

Follow doctor's instructions for when to stop eating and drinking the night before your surgery. This includes gum, candy and water.

For your safety, surgery may be delayed or cancelled if your doctor's instructions are not followed.

Surgery Day Checklist

Take only the medications ordered by your doctor with a small sip of water on the morning of surgery.
Do not eat or drink anything.
Shower and brush your teeth before coming to the hospital.
Do not use lotions, creams or cosmetics.
Leave all valuables at home or with your loved ones.
Be prepared to remove dentures, hearing aids and contact lenses.
Be on time for check-in.
Bring a list of your medications. Include the name, dose and how often you take it.
Bring your C-PAP machine and mask, if applicable.

After Surgery

Everyone recovers from anesthesia different; it can take several hours for patients to fully recover from anesthesia.

During this time:

  • You will be closely monitored by a nurse.
  • Your doctor will meet with your loved ones to explain how the surgery went and what is to be expected next.

Once you are ready for visitors, we will bring your loved ones to visit.

For Families:
Family members may wait for their loved ones at our Surgery Center or provide their contact information to the staff.

During surgery, a volunteer may be available to share updates about the patient. If there is no volunteer, you may request information via the convenient family phone.
